I suppose that an estimate of the number of all deities would amount to several millions; Wikipedia proposes a list of the main deities, apparently with questionable results.
Perhaps Girotto, Pievani and Vallortigara are right when in their book “Nati per credere”, they consider supernatural beliefs as a result of evolution. Human imagination, coupled with the innate tendency to think that a clear intention lies behind any phenomenon – whether of geological or meteorological origin -, produces ghosts and divinities.
Then comes a megalomaniac who wants to put order and have no more distinct entities, no more gods who can explain each phenomenon, but one god who explains everything.
I prefer to think of a plural solution, that does not claim to explain everything.
